The study compared attitudes of nine 6th grade students (eight female and one male) who volunteered to participate in a peer tutoring swimming program for moderately and severely handicapped children with the attitudes of the remainder of the sixth grade class (N=15) who had not volunteered. All students had previously completed a curriculum designed to develop accepting attitudes toward the handicapped. Both volunteers and non-volunteers had similar perceptions of the handicapped but volunteers had much more positive feelings toward the handicapped. Although, in general, neither perceptions nor feelings of the volunteers or non-volunteers changed after 7 weeks of the peer teaching program, the one male who also had the most negative feelings among the volunteers at pre-test reported very positive feelings at post-test.
