This sourcebook was written for teachers, counselors, and other adults who work with children from violent homes. It is based on the belief that it is never too early to intervene with victims of domestic violence. The introduction defines domestic violence, describes what happens to children in violent homes, identifies abusers, examines the woman's role in the violent family, lists symptoms of abuse in children, and looks at problems related to domestic violence. A chapter on helping children from violent homes examines what children from violent homes need, discusses issues of honest communication with domestic violence victims, and explains how adults may present positive role models to children, thus building their self-esteem. Techniques for working with children from violent homes are discussed, including the use of books, guided fantasy, open-ended storytelling, discussion of pictures, art projects, and games. Characteristics of the aggressive, silent, and ethnic child are considered. The final chapter discusses approaching the mother, what agencies need to know, agencies to call, and how the teacher or counselor can take care of herself.
