Evaluation of the Massachusetts Vocational Curriculum Resource Center. Final Report.
Haney, Walter M.
The Massachusetts Vocational Curriculum Resource Center (MVCRC) was started in 1980 to serve as the primary vehicle for providing curriculum development assistance to secondary vocational schools and programs in the state. The aim of the study reported here was to evaluate the MVCRC to determine the extent to which it has met its objectives and the impact of the Center's work on vocational programs, and to identify strategies for improving the Center's operation. As part of the evaluation study, a statewide mail survey of 500 vocational educators was conducted, with a return of 200 questionnaires (38 percent). The results of the survey showed that nearly half of all vocational teachers in the state have used the MVCRC, and more than 80 percent have heard of the Center. The survey results also showed that other educators and professionals besides teachers use the MVCRC. Nearly 80 percent of the respondents said they have used curriculum resource materials in the past two years, and the Center was the most important source of useful materials. Eighty-eight percent of respondents found the MVCRC materials quite useful or extremely useful, although home economics teachers were least satisfied with materials. All respondents said the MVCRC was extremely or quite responsive. Other information was gathered through interviews. Interviewees mentioned strengths such as usefulness, high quality staff, and networking activities. Weaknesses pertained to focus, location, and resources. Recommendations for improvement included increased publicity about the resources of the Center, additional resources, and more resources in specialty areas. (KC)
