Violent Crime, Hazing, and Arson on Campus.
Silvers, Suzanne E.
The extent of violent crimes reported on New Jersey colleges and universities in 1985 is discussed, based on reports from the institutions. Recommendations for crime prevention made by the Chancellor's Special Advisory Committee on Violent Crimes, Hazing, and Arson on Campus are also considered. There were 477 reported incidents of violent crime, hazing, and arson on New Jersey campuses during calendar year 1985, a 35% increase over the number of reported incidents during 1984. The most prevalent violent crime for the past 3 years was assault. Of the total number of incidents reported for 1985, simple assault (62.7%) and aggravated assault (13.6%) constituted 76.3% of all incidents reported. These were followed by robbery (13.0%) and arson (6.1%). There were five reported incidents of hazing in 1985. Final recommendations made by the Chancellor's Special Advisory Committee emphasize the operation of crime prevention units and the provision of basic and special training of campus police/security. Data are provided on the incidents of violent crime on campuses compared with state violent crime rates for 1983-1985. A chart indicates crime prevention steps taken by private colleges and public two-year and four-year institutions. Members of the Special Advisory Committee are also listed. (SW)
