The representation of women and members of racial and ethnic minorities among the United States' public school administrators increased between the years 1982 and 1985, according to a survey conducted by the American Association of School Administrators' Office of Minority Affairs. Following the same procedure used in a 1981-82 survey, the researchers sent letters and survey forms to all chief state school officers in the United States in 1984 requesting information on the percentage of women and minority group members among school superintendents, assistant superintendents, and elementary and secondary school principals. The results indicated that the percentage of superintendents who were women increased from 1.8 to 2.7, women assistant superintendents increased from 9 to 15 percent, and women principals increased from 16 to 21 percent. Minority superintendents increased from 2 to 3 percent, minority assistant superintendents decreased from 11 to 9 percent, and minority principals increased from 12 to 17 percent.
