The proceedings of this conference include 56 papers on program design, classroom techniques, and ideas for second language instruction for business and the professions. The papers are presented in eight groups: (1) "International Business: The Language and Culture Connection," which includes papers on multinational business, marketing, international studies, the community college program, and the role of liberal arts; (2) "Program Overviews," which includes descriptions of interdisciplinary, undergraduate, and graduate programs; (3) "Teaching Techniques," which includes papers on audiovisual and computer applications, case studies, simulation, strategic interaction, and genre-analysis for languages for special purposes; (4) "ESL (English as a Second Language) for Business and the Professions," which includes papers on English for business in Thailand, refugee nursing students, a Master of Comparative Law program, and careers in the petroleum industry; (5) "French for Business and the Professions," which includes papers on language and cultural instruction for commerce, hotel administration, health and social professionals, and other non-language majors; (6) "German for Business and the Professions," which includes papers on cross cultural prograns, cultural simulation, using visuals, commercial German, and German business letter style; (7) "Spanish for Business and the Professions," which includes papers on the American workplace and urban environment, program planning and implementation, public education, social work, law, medicine and the health professions, the psychological professions, general technical purposes, and legal assisting; and (8) papers on miscellaneous topics, including journalism, banking, court interpreting, internships, and proficiency testing.
