Teacher Advisor Program (TAP): A Multi-Cultural Approach to High School Orientation and Support for Ninth Grade Students. Teacher/Advisor Curriculum Guide.
Wasserman, Elsa R.; And Others
The Ninth Grade Teacher Advisor Program (TAP) of Cambridge (Massachusetts) Rindge and Latin School assists students in making the transition from grammar school to high school. The curriculum presented in this manual is a revised version of the materials used by TAP groups in the first year of the Ninth Grade Program. The two major themes of the curriculum are Orientation (first semester) and Empowerment (second semester). Accordingly, this teacher manual is divided into three major sections: The first, "Interactive Techniques," focuses on the teacher's role as group facilitator, providing suggestions on leading discussions and role playing. It also describes a series of games for building group skills. The second and third sections describe the activities that form the basis for the weekly group sessions. The main goals of Unit I (Orientation) are for students to get to know each other and become acquainted with their new high school. The major goals of Unit II (Empowerment) are to make students aware of learning patterns, behavior patterns, and socioeconomic patterns that affect their schooling and to take more responsisbility for their own education. For each activity, goals are outlined and specific instructions are given as to how to set up and run the exercise. An appendix describes five new games that can be used in the group sessions. (TE)
