The Take-Up and Use of the Channel Four Television Series "A Question of Economics" by Schools and Further Education Colleges.
Carr, Nigel J.
Using the series, "A Question of Economics," as the basis for a study carried out between January and May of 1985, three surveys were conducted: (1) 180 questionnaires were sent to a random sample of members of the Economics Association to determine how extensively television is used in economics instruction and how teachers used the programs; (2) questionnaires were sent to 29 first- and 19 second-year "A" level students to discover their attitudes toward the use of television in their economics courses; and (3) 25 follow-up questionnaires were sent to a random selection of teachers to examine facilities available to teachers to record and show programs. Findings show that 60 percent of the teachers surveyed were taping the series and 71 percent would make use of the programs in the future. The fact that 85.4 percent of the students sampled found the series either interesting or very interesting lends support to the use of these techniques in the classroom, although only 27.1 percent of the students reported watching the series on their own time. Although the majority of teachers used the VHS format for taping, there was great diversity in the facilities available to record and watch programs. Data tables showing composition of respondents, numbers watching the series in and out of school, student responses, assessment of the series' difficulty, analysis of attitude responses, facilities available, and time spent on classroom techniques are followed by questionnaires used in the survey.
