Interterm Programs.
Levy-Reiner, Sherry, Ed.
Forum for Liberal Education, v8 n5 Apr 1986
Interim programs at nine colleges are described. An introductory essay by Lee M. Swan, "The Interim: Potential for Quality Learning," emphasizes the potential for unique learning through the interim approach. At Augustana College (South Dakota), interim experiences are required, including core courses, internships, travel experiences, and programs on a chosen theme. Buena Vista College (Iowa) also requires freshmen to attend a humanities interim course emphasizing writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills in the context of Western classics. Colby College's (Maine) January Program has involved students in both directed research and independent study. A cluster course concept followed at Illinois Wesleyan University only requires two or three faculty members willing to work together around a common concept. Winter Term at Linfield College (Oregon) includes regular and special courses, internships, and practicums. McMurry College (Texas) offers nontraditional courses during the summer on a voluntary basis. The interim at Pacific Lutheran University (Washington) is devoted to intense study of one topic and may involve a journal, case study, or oral presentation. At Rollins College (Florida), completion of three Winter Terms is required for graduation. Finally, Samford University's (Alabama) January Term, which focuses on the liberal arts approach to professional education, enrolls law students and business majors as well as arts and sciences majors and has included trips to study foreign countries.
