New Initiatives for Transfer Students. Urban Community College Transfer Opportunities Program.
Schaier-Peleg, Barbara, Ed.
Designed to acquaint educators and administrators with the Ford Foundation's Urban Community College Transfer Opportunities Program (UCCTOP), this booklet examines the rationale for and activities and outcomes of the program. First, introductory comments indicate that UCCTOP was designed to help urban community colleges with high minority enrollments strengthen their academic and support programs so that students would be better prepared to move on to four-year institutions. Next, an essay entitled "Remembering a Tranfer Student," by Alison Bernstein, Ford Foundation Program Officer, discusses the reasons for the program's development, and a second essay, "Removing Transfer Hurdles," by Richard A. Donovan, discusses the issues and problems related to transfer from two- to four-year colleges. The final section consists of descriptions of UCCTOP-funded programs at 24 geographically diverse community colleges, featuring summaries of background information, orientation procedures, counseling, articulation with high schools and/or four-year institutions, student follow-up, curriculum development, identification of transfer students, faculty development, recruitment, honors programs, transfer information, and assessment.
