Written from the perspective of a blind rehabilitation teacher, the paper focuses on teaching daily living skills to visually impaired persons. Of primary importance is early instruction in daily living skills integrated into the child's total life experience. The parent's role as a direct and consistent influence on the way children perceive the world is emphasized, and the importance of early and continuous language stimulation is noted. Early exercises in discrimination learning are described as are practical techniques of labeling household items. Possible solutions to problems of time management and difficult tasks (such as making one's bed) are considered. A list of household tips and techniques for such tasks as laundry, pouring and measuring liquids, peeling vegetables, and spreading butter, jam, etc., is followed by a list of braille and large type cookbooks, catalogues of aids and appliances, and addresses of centers supplying source materials on daily living skills for the blind and visually handicapped.
