United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, Paris (France).
This final report presents materials from a conference that addressed the evolution of adult education and the development of adult education as an essential prerequisite for lifelong education. Among other concerns were measures to improve international and regional cooperation to promote adult education. Part I is the General Report, which describes preparation of the conference, summarizes the opening speech of Amadou-Mahtar M'Bow, Director-General of Unesco, and reports the work of the conference, adoption of the draft final report and closure, and the discussions at nine plenary meetings of the concerns mentioned above. Part II contains reports of the Commissions. Discussions of Commission I focus on the contribution adult education can make to the development of active participation in economic, social, and cultural life and to the solution of some major problems of the contemporary world. Topics include the role and objectives of adult education, priority groups, programs, methods and resources for adult education, forms of organizations of adult education, and international cooperation. The report of Commission II on ways and means to extend and improve adult education discusses renewal of methods, use of new means and techniques, information and guidance, research, and documentation; training and status of personnel; planning, finance, consultation, and coordination; and new impetus to be given to adult literacy programs. Part III lists conference recommendations and contains the declaration of the conference. Appendixes include the agenda; opening and closing addresses by the Director-General; and lists of documents and delegates, representatives, and observers. (YLB)
