The Alaska Statewide Assessment Test (ASAT) in reading and math is administered to fourth and eighth graders every two years. This document contains three separate assessment reports generally titled "An Update on the Alaska Statewide Testing Program." Assessment Report 8, "The Interpretive Panels Look at Results," lists student strengths and weaknesses on the 1983 ASAT based on a review of the test content by 70 educators from throughout the state who were nominated by their districts to serve as interpretive panel members. Assessment Report 9, "What Alaska Students Should Learn: Perspectives from Those Who Teach Them," compares results from the fourth statewide assessment (1983) with curricular emphases recommended by the Alaska Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Alaska State Reading Association. Assessment Report 10, "Better Assessment Scores are Possible. A Test Author Tells How...," discusses the preparation for the March 1985 ASAT, steps to improve students' scores, previously assessed reading and math weaknesses (1983), and questions and answers regarding assessment policy.
