This book is designed to be a stimulant to action and reflection for teachers who would like to make a study of their own teaching. The first part explores how teachers can make a personal appraisal of their teaching. An analytic procedure is used which involves gathering information about four major aspects of the teaching process: (1) the teacher's frame of reference: the ideas the teacher has about teaching; (2) the teacher's actions: what the teacher actually does; (3) the pupil's actions: what the teacher or observer is able to see pupils doing; and (4) the pupils' covert experiences: what is going on inside the pupils' minds, in terms of the thinking and feeling they are experiencing. The last two chapters contain invitations to teachers to implement and monitor change. At the beginning of the book, and at the beginning of most chapters, educational theory is used to locate and support the assumptions and arguments being made. At the end of each chapter a small number of suggested readings are identified. (JD)
