This booklet examines the role of women in an increasingly technology-based society. An introductory section outlines the logical relationship between women as consumption managers of food, clothing, and shelter needs and appropriate technology (AT) concerns. A second section, "Women's Place in Science and Technology," examines the reasons why few women, thus far, have been involved with AT. Sex role stereotypes regarding mathematics and science and traditional male control of certain technologies are cited. "Technology Necessary to Women's Autonomy" looks at the impact of high and low energy-intensive systems on women's social and economic role. "Appropriate Technology: A Male Enterprise" looks at the traditional focus of appropriate technologies on male technologies such as energy and transportation, rather than female technologies such as food preservation and clothing production. "A Case for Mutual Needs" considers whether the AT movement and the women's movement can work together. A five-part action plan is presented.
