Why Many College Teachers Cannot Lecture: How to Avoid Communication Breakdown in the Classroom.
Penner, Jon G.
Ways to prepare and present lectures that hold college students' attention and involve them in the teaching-learning process are discussed. Attention is focused on linguistic, rhetorical, and psychological aspects of classroom communication; common communication problems in the classroom; and how to overcome and avoid communication problems. Teacher preparation and inservice training programs for developing communication skills are also discussed. Specific considerations include: the way that traditional communication models can be adapted to the teaching situation; the inadequacy of teaching methods courses and training in communication skills in teacher preparation programs; the need for supervision of practice teaching; preservice and inservice training opportunities, including graduate assistantships, and summer schools for lecturers; proper use of personality in teaching; teaching methods and how they affect classroom communication; research on the lecture method; planning and organizing the lecture, including outlines, deductive and inductive arrangements, and the organization of discussions; interest and attention in the classroom; delivering the lecture; avoiding language barriers; types of motivational appeals; and student listening skills and feedback.
