Historical developments in higher education are considered in five articles. In "Conditions of University Research, 1900-1920," Roger L. Geiger focuses on faculty teaching load, sabbatical leaves and other arrangements for providing research opportunities, and research funding. An article by John H. Kohler, III, "Donald Davidson's Cultural Conservative Critique of the New University Movement in the South," considers educational changes at Vanderbilt University and Davidson's views of tradition and progressivism. Changes included the decline of the classics, the adoption of the elective system, and increased offerings in the sciences and social sciences. In "'Oars and the Man': Pleasure and Purpose in Victorian and Edwardian Cambridge," J. A. Mangan discusses athletics in the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge in the late nineteenth century. Amy Hague's article, "'What if the Power Does Lie Within Me?' Women Students at the University of Wisconsin, 1875-1900," focuses on the effects of single sex colleges on women and discriminatory attitudes and practices that continued with coeducational institutions. In the final article, "Discrimination at Syracuse University," Harvey Strum discusses discriminatory practices against Jews, Catholics, Blacks, and women at Syracuse University in the period between 1916 and 1942 and the lifting of these barriers during the decade of 1942-1952.
