Pennsylvania Profile of Education Project: Final Report.
Pennsylvania State Education Association, Harrisburg.
This Pennsylvania project aimed to assess whether or not there are differences in educational opportunities for students and teachers in districts of varying size and wealth. After preliminary interviews with 182 teachers in 17 districts, a survey was distributed to 4,470 teachers--30 teachers in each of the 149 selected school districts. A total of 2,301 usable surveys were returned. Responses to the 180 questions pertaining to curriculum, facilities, resources, job satisfaction, workload, discipline, community support, and administration were grouped, using factor analysis, into 26 scales. Slightly over a third of the report, using percentages and sample responses, focuses on 20 of the 26 scales that conformed to a 6-point response range. The second section, the "Technical Report," prepared by The Pennsylvania State University researchers, summarizes how the survey was constructed and distributed and contains the results of the analyses performed on the completed questionnaires. The results are presented in five parts: (1) correlations between two scales considered significant, (2) findings for the four measures of satisfaction, (3) information about teacher salaries, (4) impact of wealth in the areas investigated, and (5) teachers' appraisal of each scale relative to the other scales. Copies of the questionnaire and answer sheet are appended. (MLF)
