Teacher Preparation: The Anatomy of a College Degree.
Galambos, Eva C.
To document how future teachers are being educated, over 3,000 transcripts of future teachers in 14 southern states were examined, course by course. Information was sought on: (1) What courses are future teachers taking in college? (2) Do teachers take different academic courses than other students? (3) Does the general education in the first two years lay the necessary foundation for specialization and education courses? (4) What is the division of coursework between the "content" that teachers will teach, and the "methods" on how they will present the "content"; and (5) How relevant are the areas of specialization of the secondary teachers to assignments they are likely to draw in typical high schools? Chapter 1 of this monograph presents an overview of the findings. Implications of these results for strengthening teacher education programs are discussed in Chapter 2. The statistical data concerning the general education of teachers, with comparisons to arts and sciences graduates are presented in Chapter 3, followed by an outline of the statistical findings about the academic majors (Chapter 4) and the education courses teachers complete (Chapter 5). The last chapter provides some descriptive impressions about the quality of some of the courses offered. (JD)
