A support program was developed at the John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Edison, New Jersey for families of handicapped children (from birth to the age of 3) who are involved in an early intervention program. A cognitive-behavioral model (the Coping with Stress Model) was designed to help families assess coping effectiveness. The process, which emphasizes parents' capability to determine their own needs, includes parental completion of seven self-rating instruments in an informational needs survey of stressors and coping resources. Summary findings are written and shared with families in terms of strengths and weaknesses in beliefs and values, coping behavior patterns, material resources, and stressors. A family service plan is jointly developed which identifies specific goals and activities for each family member in three areas: (1) acquiring information/education; (2) receiving support/guidance; and (3) participation in therapeutic counseling. Among project activities for family-based intervention are parent support groups, evening programs for fathers, special workshops, and respite care. Data summaries and plans for two families are presented to illustrate the approach. (CL)
