Recent Works on American Society. An Annotated Bibliography for Educators.
Metcalf, Fay; Edwards, Catherine
Designed to enable European educators to obtain contemporary materials about American society, this annotated bibliography lists over 70 publications, most of which were published between 1963 and 1983. Following an introduction, the bibliography is arranged into seven chapters. Entries in sections I through IV focus on American foreign policy and international affairs (especially since 1945), the governmental systems of the United States, recent works on American history, and social and cultural change in the United States. While emphasis has been placed on contemporary materials, two classics on the U.S. governmental system--"The Federalist Papers" and Tocqueville's "Democracy in America" have been included. Emphasis throughout is on presentation of varying viewpoints on an issue. Section V presents an annotated list of 16 education and social science journals. Section VI lists three organizations specializing in curriculum and the social sciences. A final section lists the names and addresses of 47 publishers. Although intended primarily for European educators, American educators will also find this bibliography a useful resource for identifying and selecting materials to teach about American society. (LH)
