Helpful Hints for Advising and Counseling Minority Students in Predominantly White Colleges and Universities.
Jackson, George A.
Advice about advising and counseling minority students at predominantly white colleges and data about the enrollment and majors of minorities are provided. Included are a list of hints concerning: personal relations and student retention, educational development, financial assistance, and career planning. A list of words and phrases that offend minority students is also provided, along with a checklist questionnaire to help educators identify behavior they may display in and out of the classroom that is interpreted by students as prejudicial, hostile, and discriminatory. Attention is also directed to: ways that high school counselors and college admissions staff can help students maximize their chances of entering and succeeding in college; recommended courses for college-bound students for grades 9-12, and information on federal student aid programs. A few recommendations for college administrators are also included. Several statistical tables cover: the types of institutions attended by minority students by racial/ethnic category; majors selected by male and female minority students; mathematics, science, and English enrollments for minority high school students; and composite American College Testing Program and Scholastic Aptitude Test Scores of minority students.
