Style Manual: A Guide to Writing and Producing Publications.
Maryland State Dept. of Education, Baltimore.
The chief aim of this style manual is to promote clarity and consistency in writing for publication. The chapters are intended to help writers understand the publication process that begins with a need to communicate with a particular audience and ends with the distribution of the finished product. The first chapter on planning and producing a publication covers such topics as what must be edited, the anatomy of a publication, correspondence, and copyright considerations. The second chapter on mechanics covers such topics as capitalization, numbers, abbreviations, plurals, spelling, and underlining, while the third chapter on punctuation looks at the use of commas, semicolons, dashes, parentheses, quotation marks, hyphens, and ellipsis marks. The final chapter, on clear writing, treats the following subjects: agreement of subject and verb, agreement of pronoun and antecedent, pronoun reference, reflexive pronouns, case of pronouns, parallel structure, dangling modifiers, and tips on clear writing.
