This instructional guide is intended for use within inservice or continuing education programs for people who work in long-term care facilities. This module includes an overview of the normal functions of the small and large intestines and discusses the structures of the intestines, absorption in the intestines, and commonly occurring conditions that affect the intestinal tract. It also includes a discussion of medications that are prescribed for conditions of the intestinal tract, with attention to their usual use and common side effects. The lesson includes a drug chart that may be duplicated and a worksheet to be completed with the instructor. The lesson plan includes a goal and objectives and is illustrated with line drawings.
