Urban Gateways Schools Program Report, 1982-83.
Urbana Gateways, Chicago, IL.
This report describes Urban Gateways, a private, nonprofit arts and education agency serving schools in six Chicago area counties, and provides data on the program's operation in 1982-83, and a list of participating schools. The initial descriptive narrative states Urban Gateways' major goal to be that of developing and disseminating high quality arts programs with supporting curriculum materials for teachers in order to help schools to incorporate the arts into every student's basic education. The program's funding sources and its practices for selecting local professional artists as resident teachers are also outlined. Then several components of "Arts for Learning" and "Arts for the Basic Curriculum" (Urban Gateways' principal projects) are described. These include (1) in-school performances and workshops for students, (2) workshops in the arts for teachers, (3) the artist-in-residence program, 4) out-of-school events, (5) development of arts curriculum materials, (6) the Chicago Symphony-Urban Gateways Special Music Program for low income schools, (7) the musical instrument bank, and (8) parent workshops. Number of schools and students served and types of services provided also are detailed. Finally, schools participating in Urban Gateways programs in 1982-83 are listed, by town. (GC)
