Teaching about Our Jury System. Unit 1. Our Right to an Impartial Jury of Our Peers, Our Responsibility to Serve as an Impartial Factfinder When Called for Jury Service. Teaching Guide.
Van Camp, Julie
Designed for use in the junior high school curriculum, two lessons involve students in the structure and procedures of the jury system as it functions within the court system. Although intended for use with a slide program and computer software program, activities in the teaching guide can be used independently. For each lesson, background information, statement of purpose, vocabulary words, student activities, and student hand-outs are provided. Lesson one, which focuses on the jury as part of the judicial process, includes the historical development of the right to trial by jury and a description of the North Carolina Court System. Emphasis is placed on distinguishing between civil, criminal, and juvenile cases and the differences between issues of fact and issues of law. Through simulations, observations, and interaction with community resources suggested in lesson two, students learn about jury selection and participation, with an emphasis on the deliberation process. Students also learn about the selection process in other countries, while studying about the historical background of the selection and deliberation process in the United States. Emphasis is placed on guarantees of an impartial jury of one's peers, with reference to federal and state cases which deal with these issues. Additional resources include a copy of the jury education film-strip script, a list of related publications, and guidelines for resource persons. (LH)
