A Study of the Academic Qualifications of Students Recommended for Basic Teaching Credentials.
Cohen, David
A comparative study was made of teacher credential candidates who completed both an undergraduate degree and the teacher preparation program at the same California State University (CSU) campus. At each campus within the CSU system, a comparable group not seeking a teaching credential, but having the same or similar academic majors, was selected from a list of those receiving a baccalaureate degree. Comparisons were based on grade-point averages (GPA) in five categories: (1) cumulative GPA for the baccalaureate degree; (2) GPA in academic major; (3) GPA in courses earned at the campus awarding the baccalaureate; (4) GPA at the time the student began the professional education course; and (5) GPA in subjects identified as basic skills. In all five GPA comparisons, those recommended for teaching credentials varied less than a tenth of a grade point (on a four-point scale) from students in the noncredential group. However, both the in-system totals and the majority of individual campus totals indicated that credential candidates held a slight but statistically reliable advantage in GPA comparisons in all categories.
