The bibliography lists 610 creative works, written by Mexicans and their descendents living or having lived in what is now the United States, published as books, unpublished dissertations of book length, periodical titles that include both creative and critical literary writings on the Chicano experience, and video and sound recordings. The bibliography also includes "literatura chicanesca," works that deal with the Mexican American but are written by non-Chicanos. Numbered consecutively and organized by genre and then alphabetically by author or main entry, each citation includes author and/or title, place of publication, publisher, copyright date, and pagination or, in the case of recordings, length in minutes. The 13 genre headings and number of entries in each category are: poetry (209), novel (69), short fiction (24), theatre (18), literary criticism (33), literatura chicanesca (23), oral tradition (28), anthology (64), literary periodicals (51), unpublished dissertations (34), bibliographies and encyclopedia (13), autobiographical works (7), and video and sound recordings (37). Separate author and title indexes are provided. The bibliography is issued as a "working bibliography" with the expectation that other writers and bibliographers will review it for comprehensiveness.
