NAIS Arts Planning Group Report.
National Association of Independent Schools, Boston, MA.
Guidelines are presented to help promote excellent arts education in independent schools. Following an introduction in chapter 1, there are six major chapters. Chapter 2, "Curriculum," discusses goals, suggests teaching patterns, and recommends interdisciplinary cooperation. The focus of the third chapter is administrative strategies. Discussed are requirements and electives; evaluation, grading, and credit; the role of the arts in admission; class size; scheduling; curriculum development; interschool cooperation; outreach; and public relations. Chapter 4, "The Arts Faculty," deals with the selection and support of teachers and faculty evaluation. Budgets, facilities, and funding are examined in the fifth chapter. A summary of major recommendations is outlined in the concluding chapter. Provided in the appendices are two outlines, the first of K-12 curricula in music, theater, and visual arts, and the second of elements of dance, music, theater, and visual arts programs. (RM)
