Representing a collective effort by scholars belonging to four ethnic minority groups in the United States (Blacks, Asian and Pacific Americans, American Indians, and Hispanic Americans), this book discusses training, curriculum, and research needs in the education of students who intend to enter the mental health professions and work with these groups. The book is divided into four parts, covering the areas of psychology, social work, psychiatry, and psychiatric nursing. Each part contains four chapters focusing on each of the ethnic groups, and written by members of those groups. The contributors describe the state of the art in each discipline, including trends in the literature, theoretical frameworks, and methodologies; identify deficits, stereotypes and biases in mental health research, theory, and practice; outline areas of knowledge about the ethnic groups that must be integrated into mental health curricula if training and services are to improve; explore mental health policymaking at different levels; and present guidelines, recommendations, and strategies for change. In general, the articles suggest that ethnic minorities receive inadequate and inappropriate mental health services from poorly trained practitioners, and that policymaking and curriculum development must address these deficiencies.
