A National Survey of Student Teaching Programs. 1981.

Findings are presented of research on 902 student teaching programs. The research study focused on: (1) administration of student teaching programs; (2) selected aspects regarding the student teachers themselves; and (3) selected aspects of cooperating teachers and school districts. A prefatory abstract presents a discussion of the objectives of the study and the method of collecting data. It also summarizes the findings and offers conclusions and recommendations. A paper is included which states 24 selected characteristics for an excellent teacher education program and lists, in descending order, 35 institutions which met the highest number of the established criteria. This document includes a copy of the survey instrument, selected preliminary tables, and seven attached supplemental reports on: (1) lawsuits growing out of student teaching; (2) pay cost of student transportation during student teaching; (3) total student teaching budget; (4) innovations in student teaching programs; (5) research grants related to student teaching; (6) university supervisor load formula; and (7) title of person in charge of student teaching.
