Classroom ideas and resource information for teachers in the areas of visual, hearing, and mobility impairments; developmental handicaps; and mental illness are presented. For each disability three topics of discussion are introduced to help the student understand individuals who have the disability. The first discussion area deals with the personal experience of having a particular disability, including everyday functions (e.g., dressing, shopping) and special equipment. The second area concerns the movement/activities of the disabled in the community, the choices and barriers they face, and the kinds of special services that help them surmount the barriers. The third area is designed to help the nonhandicapped person feel more comfortable when meeting the handicapped and to enable them to be most helpful to the handicapped person. For each section, there are true-false statements, questions to stimulate discussion, and activities to enhance the learning experience. In addition, resource information accompanies each of the five sections on disabilities. The resources include background information on the impairment, a glossary of terms and issues; and a listing of names of organizations, films by educational levels, and books by educational level. In addition, bibliographies of 20 general resources, 7 book lists, and 6 film resources are appended. (SEW)
