This handbook, written for volunteer coordinators working with programs in adult basic education (ABE) and English as a second language (ESL), consists of information dealing with the planning, day-to-day coordination, and followup efforts needed to utilize volunteers effectively. Addressed in the individual sections of the guide are the following topics: the extent and the cost effectiveness of volunteerism, the role of the volunteer coordinator, volunteer motivation, working with staff, program planning and evaluation, recruitment, job applications, interviews, placement and orientation, training, record maintenance, and recognition. An annotated listing of resources for use in developing volunteer programs and a handbook source bibliography are also provided. Appended to the guide are an assessment tool for use in planning or redesigning volunteer programs and a description of, and forms utilized in, the development of a volunteer program to provide ESL instruction to Indochinese refugees at Clark College in Washington.
