A study was conducted to provide guidelines for the military and civilian communities to aid in establishment of quality extended-day child care programs. Questions addressed in a review of the literature included the following: (1) Is extended-day child care needed in the United States for both military and civilian populations? (2) Is quality extended-day child care available now? (3) What models are presently in use in foreign countries? and (4) Do financial conditions encourage or hinder the growth of extended-day child care centers? Research, involving visitation at three civilian extended-day child care centers in the Detroit and Ypsilanti areas of Michigan, was conducted to assess the need for such programs, the type of program offered, financial aspects governing center operations, and professional comments on current problems of extended-day child care centers and the future growth of such centers. A survey of military parents of children under 6 years of age was also undertaken to determine need for an extended-day child care center, the kinds of extended-day child care programs preferred, and financial considerations.
