Career Development Intervention in Fourth Grade.
Dobson, Ruth
This paper contains a unit of six career awareness lessons for use by elementary guidance counselors with fourth grade students. Prepared to be used with fourth graders in a middle class small community elementary school in Wisconsin, the unit is based on developmental needs that have been identified for this age group. It is intended to be both preventive and developmental so that students have a positive environment in which to learn about themselves and others and to become more motivated and self-directed. Each of the lessons contains objectives, activities for students and teachers, and evaluation suggestions. Resources such as films, filmstrips, and workbooks are identified. Topics covered in the lessons include the wide variety of occupations available, occupations in a small community, a visit to a restaurant to see restaurant personnel at work, job clusters and job classifications, sex stereotypes, and personal observations of males and females in traditional and nontraditional jobs.
