The Role of Mentoring in the Development of Professional Psychologists.
Harmon-Bowman, Mona; Elmore, Richard T., Jr.
This paper provides an overview of mentoring in psychology, and includes the components of teaching, modeling, guiding, sponsoring, and counseling. The contributions of mentors toward the professional success of men and women in business, medicine and education are discussed. The materials suggest a need for further research because the literature review revealed no specific writing on the role of mentoring in the development of professional psychologists. Throughout the paper an annotated bibliography of books and journal articles dealing with the importance of mentors in career development is provided. (Author/JAC)
