This paper argues that the advent of the optical videodisc has removed one of movie making's basic tenets: that is, the unfolding of the imagery and the order of succession of the frames. It maintains that the optical videodisc provides the opportunity for topical and temporal reconfiguration of the images wherein the viewer becomes an active participant interfacing with computer programs that serve as intermediaries between the viewer and the film. The paper goes on to explore new types of movies and new film techniques made possible by videodisc technology, and the role of the computer in random access--and interactive--movies and available interfaces for users. Additional technological developments that may provide the user with a "virtual camera" as well as a computer to edit are briefly considered. (Author/MER)
