A language program often provides for the needs of gifted students by extra assignments or independent study. What is needed is a way to provide them with valid projects that do not add significantly to the teacher's work load. One way to do this is to plan lessons on an individual basis for the gifted student and to expand them for use with an entire class. Three areas for independent work with gifted students are culture, grammar and syntax, and the four basic language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In the area of culture, students can investigate foreign number and monetary systems and design group activities deriving from their investigations. They can study and do projects on music and poetry, using the basic language skills at the same time. Activities directed particularly to developing the four skills might involve listening to news and music, working up interviews, discovery exercises, and role-playing experiences. More advanced students might be asked to read a selection in the target language and summarize it in the native language. Various types of writing projects in the target language could be suggested. Regardless of the project, the students should be encouraged to develop activities that other students could participate in, and to direct the group activity they have developed. (AMH)
