Recommendations From Teachers in Small Rural High Schools for Modification of the Teacher Training Program of the University of Alaska: A Survey. Investigative Report.
Mayne, Dorothy H.
Data was obtained from 52 principals and teachers in 46 small rural high schools in Alaska to determine ways in which the University of Alaska could improve its teacher education program and its services to teachers. Most of the respondents had not received their training at the University of Alaska. Three out of four respondents expressed satisfaction with their program and felt well prepared for teaching Indian and Eskimo youth in rural villages. Recommendations made for the university's teacher training program were for a more generalized background in elementary and secondary coursework and higher standards in selecting the type of person who will teach in rural schools. Areas in the preservice program that were cited in the recommendations include: methods courses, cultural study, orientation to rural teaching, a generalist program, academic and vocational educational background, special education courses, and student teaching in rural areas. Recommendations on ways the university could aid current teachers included provision of correspondence courses, resource materials and people, inservice workshops, summer programs, newsletters, onsite extension courses, a generalist program, and university staff to help in the village schools. The three recommendations made by respondents across all age groups and years of experience were that: (1) Secondary teachers should be trained like elementary teachers; (2) Teacher education should be more generalist; and (3) Prospective rural teachers should be carefully screened for personality traits that are important in adapting to village life and culture.
