Development and Implementation of a Multi-Purpose School Volunteer Program in an Adult Education Center.
Kellogg, Larry James
A community volunteer program was developed for Miami Southridge Adult Education Center in Dade County, Florida. The program was designed to serve a variety of needs, including providing remedial training for students preparing to take the General Educational Development examination, providing supervisory and tutorial services for the children of adult education students, enabling adult education faculty to work with small groups of students in overcrowded classroom settings, providing general clerical services, and providing a variety of volunteer assignments to meet the varying needs of the adult education program. The program's accomplishments included (1) institutionalization of 22 volunteers for the adult education program; (2) a 38 per cent satisfactory completion rate for students repeating the General Educational Development examination after failing on the first attempt; and (3) a 28 per cent increase in enrollments made possible because of the availability of supervisory and tutorial services to participants' children. The program was determined to be highly effective and cost effective and was recommended for duplication at other institutions. (Appendixes, constituting half the document, contain various project surveys, planning and check sheets, and an administrator guide for implementing an adult education volunteer program.) (Author/MN)
