A Study of the Continuing Education Needs of Virginia's Citizens with a Special Emphasis on the Needs of Blacks. Volumes I and II.
Bryant, Mary Forbes; Phillips, J. C.
This study identified the characteristics of Virginia students involved in State-supported continuing education programs in two and four year higher education institutions. The sample consisted of 40,406 part-time students enrolled in on campus and off campus courses offered for credit, and in non-credit courses. Data were collected through a multiple choice questionnaire. The study focused on the needs and characteristics of black students. Many similarities between black and white students were found. Differences found included: (1) blacks more often than whites perceived financial reasons as a potential barrier to taking continuing education courses, (2) blacks more often than whites expressed an interest in additional courses in Basic Education, and (3) in urban areas of the State, more blacks were enrolled in traditionally white institutions than in traditionally black ones. Volume I of the report presents the study methodology and results and a discussion of the findings. Tables of data are included and the survey instrument is appended. The second volume of the report is a technical appendix consisting of tables of data. (Author/MK)
