A task force composed of educators and members of the business community studied the effects of declining enrollment on the mathematics program in Ontario. The group suggests that the main impact of decline on the mathematics program will be an intensification of the existing problems, which include insufficient student practice in mathematical principles, inappropriate divisions of instruction, unclear teacher expectations of standards to be achieved by students, and lack of communication among schools and teachers. The task force criticizes the ministry guidelines requiring five levels of instruction and considers the minimum school size required to effectively provide a multilevel mathematics program. Modified appointment scheduling, which provides for considerable individual interaction between teacher and student and allows for the combination of students at different levels in one class, is presented as a teaching strategy that is easily adapted to any situation.
