1980 Wisconsin Pupil Assessment Program Report.
Wisconsin State Dept. of Public Instruction, Madison. Div. for Management and Planning Services.
Results of the fifth year of testing by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction are presented. In 1980, objective-referenced tests in mathematics and reading were given to a sample of Wisconsin's public school students in grades 4, 8, and 12. Students were also given the Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills (CTBS) in mathematics, reading, and language arts. An overview of results includes the following: (1) in mathematical computation, grade 4 students scored highest in addition and multiplication of whole numbers, whereas grade 8 and 12 students scored highest on whole number and decimal problems; (2) in each of the computation areas, grade 12 students scored 3-11 points higher than grade 8 students on the same test items; (3) in reading, grade 4 students averaged 72% correct in educational reading and 81% correct in everyday reading, grade students averaged 71% and 77%, and grade 12 students averaged 83% and 88%; (4) on identical reading test items, grade 12 students averaged 10 percentage points higher than grade 8 students; and (5) scores of grade 4, 8, and 12 students exceeded the national average on the CTBS.
