Nine California community colleges were surveyed in 1979-1980 to determine the ratios of certified disability counselors to students with hearing, speech, visual, or mobility impairments; students with learning disabilities (average or limited); students with other health problems; and students in convalescent and nursing homes. Survey findings indicate that the number of disabled students at the colleges ranged from 166 to 3,024 with the average number of disabled students being 883.2, and that the number of counselors at these schools who specialize in serving disabled students ranged from one full-time equivalent (FTE) counselor to 20 FTE counselors, with the average being 5.2 FTE counselors. The student/counselor ratios ranged from 90.9:1 to 915:1, with the average being 169.1:1. The average numbers of students per counselor for each category were estimated at: (1) 95.1 for the visually impaired; (2) 42.9 for the speech impaired; (3) 74.3 for the visually impaired; (4) 361.4 for the mobility impaired; (5) 234.2 for students with learning disabilities/average; (6) 194.1 for students with learning disabilities/limited; and (7) 240.8 for those with other problems. Only two of the colleges served students in convalescent or nursing homes. Included in the report are the potential weekly contact hours per student for each of the disability categories. (JP)
