Population education is the educational process which helps people understand the implications of population factors for the well-being of the individual, the family and society. Such education seeks to equip the individual with knowledge, understanding and skills that enable him to assess population situations and trends in terms of the problems they may pose and decide upon and take effective courses of action to help solve population-related problems. This kind of training is relevant to people working in agriculture and other areas of rural development because they should understand the impact of population factors on the programs they are seeking to initiate. Rural training institutes may include population education in their teaching program by (1) instituting a separate population course; (2) adding a population unit of study in existing courses, where appropriate; or (3) infusing population elements in relevant topics of existing courses. Depending upon the local conditions and available resources, one or more of these three alternatives may be employed. Population education could be integrated into the curriculum through teacher training, selection of courses containing the new element, potential resources, etc. Examples of courses fitting the three alternatives are appended.
