This handbook gives directions and suggestions for planning and delivering a Math Careers Program for urban women with high school diplomas or General Equivalency Diplomas (GEDs) in a continuing education setting and suggests other settings. The Math Careers Program is designed with a basic assumption that as women's mathematical achievement increases, so do their confidence and comprehension. The goals of the program are: (1) to develop mathematics skills appropriate to one's career choice; (2) to increase awareness of the occupational applications of these skills; (3) to improve one's self-concept; and (4) to broaden one's career aspirations. The Math Career Program can be adapted to high school or college programs, corporate training sites, technical schools, and community-based criminal justice programs. The handbook includes a bibliography of mathematics, counseling, and career information; a 16-week lesson-plan model; eight counseling workshops; and occupational math modules representing traditional and non-traditional careers and a variety of job levels.
