This volume contains the reports of the task forces assigned to advise the President's Commission on Foreign Language and International Studies. Task forces were formed in the following areas: Institutional Language Policy, Commonly Taught Languages, Less Commonly Taught Languages, Public Awareness, and Government Relations. The longest report, that of the Institutional Language Policy Task Force, produced 52 recommendations in the area of program development and improvement. The following supplementary reports are included: (1) "Statement of Goals for Programs in Classical Studies," by Gilbert Lawall; (2) "A National Ten-Year Plan for Teaching and Training in the Less Commonly Taught Languages: Source Materials for the Report of the Task Force on the Less Commonly Taught Languages," by Leon I.
