The report--over half of which consists of appendixes--describes the Family Therapy Institute, a statewide program in Rugby, North Dakota devoted to the deinstitutionalization of juvenile delinquent status offenders by means of short term intensive family therapy treatment. Among the aspects covered are a history of the philosophical approach behind the institute; program goals and populations served; current program design (including the physical setting, length of stay, clients served, and a "typical stay") program setting; other resources serving youth; the climate for juvenile justice services in North Dakota; the therapy itself (including basic assumptions, conceptualization of family systems, staff support, supervision, and location of therapy); how families are referred; the program's organizational structure (including the agency and the staff); and funding (including budgeting). Also covered are Phase 1 of the program, which provides temporary shelter care for youth who otherwise would probably not be reunited with their families following a crisis; the program's followup component; and future directions. A discussion of program evaluation focuses on program statistics (including information on families, referred offenders, services provided, and referral sources), and evaluation of results (as seen by the institute, the families, and the referral sources and state network).
