Industrial Hygiene Technologist Model. Final Report.
Joliet Junior Coll., IL.
A project revised the existing Occupational Safety Program at Joliet Junior College (JJC) to indicate an AAS degree option in Industrial Hygiene Technology (IHT). Its objectives were to (1) utilize, where possible, existing courses within the college's curricula; (2) align the structure of the proposed curriculum with accreditation/certification criteria for Industrial Hygiene Technicians as set forth by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH); and (3) create an informational package describing the new program and conduct dissemination activities. A survey of technical colleges identified those having IHT curricula and/or courses to discern trends in education requirements. Fifty-three courses from existing JJC curricula were submitted to 133 industrial hygienists for suitability ranking within an IHT model curriculum. A certified industrial hygienist with a background in training and education was hired as a consultant to evaluate surveys and develop a sequence of courses for the model curriculum. Consultant liaison activities ensured that the program was in line with ABIH accreditation standards. Brochures with accompanying slides were developed to promote the program. Visitations established IHT internship stations and did preliminary program promotion. (Extensive attachments include the ranking survey and results, consultant's report, and course outlines for Industrial Hygiene I and II.) (YLB)
