A three-part, state-wide survey was conducted in Spring 1979, to determine employer satisfaction with the vocational programs offered at Hawaii's high schools and community colleges. Three populations were involved in the survey: (1) the personnel directors of 29 firms representing approximately 25% of the businesses in Hawaii with 250 or more employees; (2) the managers of a stratified random sample of smaller businesses proportional to a state employment profile based on the categories used in the Standard Industrial Classification Index; and (3) the coordinators of 15 apprenticeship programs which supplement on-the-job training with instruction at community colleges. Personal interviews were conducted with the personnel managers and the program coordinators, while small business managers were surveyed by mail. The businesses were asked, among other items, to evaluate the personal and occupational abilities of vocational education graduates and to assess the relative ability of employees who had undergone vocational training and those who had not. Apprenticeship coordinators were asked to evaluate the community college component of the apprenticeship programs and to compare these programs with those not having such a component. The survey report summarizes, both textually and graphically, findings for each of the survey populations. (JP)
